An AL woman shot a man who’d just raped her. She shot him as he choked her brother, who’d just arrived to help. 48 hrs later, she was charged with murder. Today, she lost her Stand Your Ground Hearing. In Al, women rarely win.

At least 83 civilians in Syria have been killed by govt strikes in the last 2 weeks, including 33 children, says the UN. Observers say at least 300 have been killed since Dec. The UN says govt forces have targeted civilian buildings and hospitals.

Over 520,000 people in Syria have fled their homes because of government strikes since December. 80% are women and children. It is one of the biggest mass displacements since the conflict began, and many more are at risk. The UN says many "urgently" need food and shelter.

On an unrelated note- check out this FB post from 6 years ago. Wish I remembered the context but it holds true today.

Do not call a patient a poor historian because you failed to use an interpreter for their language to take your history

How has medical parlance made its way into your everyday language? I'll start: I say that things have "nadired" (verb) all the time, and that it's "not unreasonable" to do a given thing. Ex: My mood had nadired, so it seemed not unreasonable to eat an entire box of Oreos.

Ex - when (men) point out that today’s med students are comprised of more women than men as if to say things are equal now..that’s great, but the system these women have to exist in is still a malignant patriarchy that demands them to embrace toxic masculine culture to survive 🤷🏾‍♀️

The system is designed to allow for a certain number of women/black people/people with disabilities, etc into it without actually having to change. Instead, it asks those that “make it” to the top to change themselves to fit the machine. All while remaining toxic to them.

Mass incarceration costs $182 billion a year in the United States. Imagine the peace we’d see if we invested that money in preventative programs and restorative justice practices.

This study needs to be discussed regularly. Current-day provider bias perpetuates health inequities. In 2016 (!), med students & residents believed Black people had thicker skin & aged more slowly than whites influencing pain treatment recommendations.

"Nearly one-third of projected U.S. net farm income in 2019 came from government aid and taxpayer-subsidized commodity insurance payments." In farming, Trump achieved the apotheosis of Republican economics: the wealthy get subsidized profits while everyone else goes bankrupt.

What if US med schools, knowing 75% will work at non-academic institutions, took responsibility for guaranteeing library access online to all graduates, so all physicians could readily access the best medical evidence available?
