Also, there are several movies based on their novels: Tarkovsky's Stalker (based on Roadside Picnic); Dead Mountaineer Hotel; Hard to be a God; Dark Planet (the adaptation of the Prisoners of Power I haven't watched).

The comment I was making to , concerned the relationship (or lack thereof) between the Star Trek universe and the Noon Universe; e.g., how the Prime Directive is basically the opposite of the concept of progressors, but also (for me),

The Time Wanderers will be difficult to understand without the antecedents.

or with Far Rainbow (especially for the tiny humans interested in sci fi), but with the caveat that, while it examines very interesting problems of ethics, it is also largely irrelevant to the rest of the cycle.

Those who haven’t read anything by these authors may want to start with either Beetle in the Anthill (I consider this to be by far the best of their works, and it does not require one to have read the previous works to understand,

paraphrasing, the novel was supposed to end with “The world that you describe can exist only in one’s imagination, but not in reality”. An apt verdict for the communist utopia, really. (See (in Russian)).

The Time Wanderers was the last published novel in the series, but there was another one planned: White Queen (for the chess piece). The planned ending of that novel is quite remarkable and illustrative:

One has to recall that the context of these literary works was the communist reality of the USSR (1960s - 80s), and the refraction of this reality through the plots is interesting to examine...

Obviously, the books contain far more layers and multitude of ideas around social interactions and social engineering than this one aspect I am focusing on here, and there are more works in the Noon Universe than I have mentioned above.

Beetle in the Anthill and The Time Wanderers, the problem is reversed: suddenly, it is us who are subjected to the progressors of a far more advanced civilization. Finally, in The Time Wanderers, the evolution of civilizations per se is explored.

In “Hard to be God” and “Space Mowgli” , what we see are mostly observers, while in Prisoners of Power and Beetle in the Anthill, we see active influence, planned and otherwise, on the fate of other civilizations.

The “Committee for Contacts with Alien Civilizations” that oversees their activities plays a central role in the narrative of several works.

One of the key ideas they explored in these works revolved around the concept of “progressors”: people, whose job it is to accelerate the evolution of (other) civilizations.

I think this is worth a quick thread, especially for the non-Russian speaking sci fi fans. “Noon Universe”, is a fictional setting spanning literary works of two great Soviet sci fi writers, the Strugatsky brothers.
