I understand the position of not interfering in what members write or adopting a position on disputes and debates between members. But I think this case shows the limits of that position. Philip Pullman will, understandably, be seen by many as representing the SoA (1/?)

even when commenting in a personal capacity. I worry that by being unable or unwilling to be clear in the position on his actual comments the SoA is encouraging a false equivalence between people defending racism and anti-racism. And by doing that risks being exactly what (2/3)
