Pretty damning article, but ultimately you wonder why it matters (makes a credible case for Borge Ousland being first to cross unsupported btw). It seems when it comes to exploring the frozen south we haven't moved on from Amundsen + Scott

Really impressive animation from where you can see - in red - major fire events in South America and Indonesia (August to September 2019), and extreme wildfires in Australia (December 2019 to January 2020).

For all those wondering why the 'Medieval Warm Period' does not look warm, it is because the evidence suggests it was NOT a globally coherent event. Please update your understanding. (See: or )

This BBC headline has been getting a lot of attention, and is an inaccurate framing of our recent Nature piece. We argue that its misleading when the RCP8.5 emission pathway is used as "business-as-usual". Its not misleading when its described as a worst-case scenario. 1/2

The story about climate scenarios today is really about the success of climate science. Without the science of the past few decades - longer - we might have emitted CO2 faster & faster, burning all the coal we could find. Instead, we saw the threat, and we slowed down. 🔥

Did you know there are Māori oral histories of Polynesian voyagers reaching the Antarctic before the Heroic Age? Voyager Tamarereti believed the Southern Lights indicated a god's temple. He encountered "precipitous ice-cliffs" and a "country [...] wrapped in ice and snow." EM

The world’s most widely cited (& prestigious) scientific journal is sounding the red alarm for Australia, and it’s not mincing words: ‘Australia — the world’s largest coal exporter — has repeatedly prioritized the coal industry’s needs over the planet’s.’
