A VPN is a one-hop, single point of failure. Your VPN provider can see all of your activity. So can NSA. Tor mixes traffic in a better way across a wider network. Even if the first or last hop is bad, they don't know what you're doing (entrance node) or where you are (exit node).https://twitter.com/Witcher_01/status/941013218096570368 …

Is there a reason you use TOR to connect to Twitter and not another service (e.g. VPN)?

Basic rule of thumb: A VPN is for privacy. TOR is for anonymity. If you're using TOR to login into your personal email or to visit your personal facebook account then you're no longer anonymous. If youre using a VPN to stay anonymous, well then, you're directly connected so no.

Completely had these two mixed. Thank you very much for raising users' awareness. I have a question: Is TOR used for only web browsing?

Nope, but web browsing whether browsing the clear web or the dark web (.onion sites)) is probably the most common use but you can send anything TCP-based over tor like ssh sessions and stuff.

You can connect to Tor network and use it as a system wide proxy too.

If you don't have enough technical knowledge about TOR networks, this docker image could help you out:https://github.com/PeterDaveHello/tor-socks-proxy …

Start by figuring out how asynchronous cryptography / public key cryptography works. Then you can tie that knowledge into how https and VPN's work. Then look into how tor works.

After doing some research I found that nordvpn is the one vpn that can't be hit by dmca request due to operation in Panama.

Any true no-log VPN is good against a DMCA request. You can't hand over information you don't have.

This is the gist of the privacy issue right here - gaining and maintaining it now requires a level of technical proficiency and persistence that the vast majority of people simply do not have.

TOR It’s a browser. What’s so difficult about using another browser as an alternative to what’s available?

Secure browsing is just one issue. Smart phones w/gps tracking, messaging apps, email apps, smart TVs & appliances, alexa & similar, multi factor authentication, pw management, easy pass tracking, subway cards... the list of vulnerabilities goes on & on & on.

Yeah we are surveilled in unprecedented ways. However, it seems team Trump is now using that surveillance to curtail the “bad actors”. #Qanon

Freedom isn't about which guys hold the means of control; its a framework whereby no one is allowed to use the means of control w/out a proper warrant.
