Yesterday, Iceland's government convened for the first time after the summer break. At midnight the next day, the government has fallen.

I'm super happy for the gov to fall, but your interpretation is badly misinformed. Like really badly 1/

Iceland has legal process where former felons/convicts can apply to have their "slate cleaned" 5 years after they´ve done their sentence 2/

This is often called a pardon, even when the penalty has already been served (see: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jan/31/uk-issues-posthumous-pardons-thousands-gay-men-alan-turing-law …). "Expungement" wouldn't fit 140.

What you're talking about is different. The Icelandic, er.. thing, does in no way imply he was innocent or take away the fact of the crime.

The process is literally called "restoring honor" in every English-language article I've read by an Icelandic newspaper.

Pardon is "náðun" in Icelandic and is a specific and different thing to restoration of honour "uppreist æru".

I know that would be the legally accurate definition but in terms of how language is used, it is not incorrect

I'm no media expert but is legal accuracy kind of important when reporting about the fall of a government?

You are just wrong on this. A pardon is a totally different thing, the pres. has (formally) the power to pardon, see art. 29 of constitution

In fact current Justice Minister put a halt on all "restorations of honor", and put the whole antiquated process under review.

Unfortunately, the English-language articles are not always written by people with the right knowledge and vocabulary for the subject.

Ergo, having multiple daily publications in a country with the population of 350.000 does result in a lack of resources and specialisation.

The English language versions of most mainstream papers are also a low-priority operation with low or no return of investment.

Right, which happens to A) be a literal translation of the Icelandic term "uppreist æru" + B) have very specific meaning in English. Unlucky
