      Edward Snowden Retweeted Ruptly

Images of Ecuador's ambassador inviting the UK's secret police into the embassy to drag a publisher of--like it or not--award-winning journalism out of the building are going to end up in the history books. Assange's critics may cheer, but this is a dark moment for press freedom.https://twitter.com/Ruptly/status/1116277306161618944 …

      Edward Snowden Retweeted

For the folks reflexively saying "there weren't any secret police!", here's the reporter who was on the ground saying some of the arresting officers had been staking out the embassy in plain clothes for days. https://twitter.com/CassandraRules/status/1116285704630407168 …

Assange is wanted, so why not stake out the embassy?

Plain clothes police are not "secret police". Russia used to have a strong "secret police" organisation. Ask them what it was like. Not wearing your uniform in sensitive situations is not that.

Yes, because a vocal Assange supporter is a reasonable and measured voice on this. Are cops in unmarked police cars chasing neds in BMWs now 'secret police' too?

Not very ‘secret’ then are they if the reporters have seen them for days..

"UK's secret police" ... I think he means plain clothed. As in all of CID. Who can be spotted a mile off. Nothing unusual, so use emotive langauge like "UK's secret police". Poor. @peterjukes

I have no idea who’s in the right about Assange but calling undercover detectives ‘secret police’ demonstrates that you have zero understanding of how the police system works in the UK. Maybe have a google on the topic before your next tweet...?

They’re about to arrest a guy who’s been avoiding the law across the world for years and you think they’re just going to turn up on the day, get real.

That would be plain clothes police then.
