Each ER-2 wing also carries instruments: the Cloud Physics Lidar on the right and CosMIR and AMPR on the left, both a type of instrument called a radiometer, which detects microwaves naturally emitted by different types of precipitation, including rain and snow.

While the IMPACTS mission ✈️ is in the field studying snow up close, the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission satellite 🛰 is studying snow — and snowflakes ❄️ — from space! research is looking at snow from the ground up above the atmosphere.

Both aircraft were also positioned for a GPM satellite overpass comparison, which will provide useful data to evaluate satellite retrievals of cloud properties.

The third science flight of wrapped up earlier today, with the P-3 and ER-2 sampling the microphysical evolution of precipitation generated by convection and stratiform clouds along an oceanic front. All data are preliminary.

Winter storms can cost $300 to $700 million per snow day in lost productivity. Our technologists have worked for decades to improve the technology for determining how much snow will fall from any mass of clouds. ✈️ 🌨️ 🛩️

Not only did the P-3 collect great data in cloud, the ER-2 was almost directly overhead most of the flight collecting radar measurements of the storm below.
