For what it’s worth I’ve never met a single Indonesian Muslim with extremist views (not to say they don’t exist). Agree that the extremist ones should be deported however

Aren't most of the extremeists British? Where could we deport them to?

And in terms of them being British, legally yes. Culturally, no.

Who gets to decide what is and isn’t ‘culturally British?’

Too simplistic an outlook I’m afraid.

No matter what answer you think a ‘majority’ is will be down to your own personal definition and prejudices. British culture (if it exists) can be defined differently by anyone. No one has a monopoly on claiming what British culture is, be it a ‘majority’ or an ‘outsider’ group.

This kind of relativism makes for weak societies, There are many things which a majority (way more than half) of people would consider characteristic of British culture, and other things that are most certainly not.

Dangerous road to try and box off what ideals and values are ‘British’ or not. Especially, when by extension such ideals are being subtly defined as correct (British), or wrong (Other).

The dangerous road is to turn a blind-eye and fail to prosecute behaviours which never have been and never should be part of our culture e.g.female circumcision. Would you be happy with that becoming a new part of British culture? How about polygamy? What about stoning?

I think if you look back over what I said, I didn’t call for any of those to become part of accepted norms. I’m demonstrating that boxing off ‘British’ culture based on ‘majority’ opinion is a dangerous path to go down and a weak argument to build from.
