‘Y’all’ and ‘folks’ have an expropriative vibe. I guess I’m not too bothered by inauthenticity, but all of these people can’t be from the south or AAVE speakers or Iowa farmers. And I didn’t like ‘folks’ back when GW Bush & Sarah Palin were using it to patronize voters.
-
Agreed. Have been annoyed about “y’all” ever since I went to college in the south and had to listen while all the New Jersey kids around me “accidentally” developed southern speech tics and pointed out the change to anyone who’d listen

True, but faulty parallellism! Your list item is about “y’all;” my whole list is about the act of tweeting about how perfect and necessary “y’all” is—I’m not wading into the debate but commenting on the debate, as badly as many people want to bring me into the fray :)

When I lived in Texas people also used it in the singular. People asked, 'Y'all from New York?' when I was the only subject of the inquiry.

Wow. Texans do *everything* wrong!

I was just going to throw in the Philly "youse" I haven't pulled that out in about 35 years!
