Is patches a must?
I would certainly recommend it. Vs aggro you need to get an early board presense to keep from getting overwhelmed, (and he works great with cannon). Vs control decks you basically want to kill them by turn 5 so they can't reno/plague or whatever so again that early board is key.

With cards like Tinker's Sharpsword oil too it's at its best when there's minions left on board to get buffed so the more likely it is that one sticks, the better.
