  1. Our yesterday was a halocline. In the Hardbottom tank,we were refilling the tank after a water change with a mix of fresh and salt water when refilling the tanks. The fresh water is less dense than the salt water causing a halocline to form!

Staghorn & elkhorn corals (Acropora) dominated Caribbean reefs for 1000s of yrs, then collapsed region-wide in 80s. Both listed as IUCN critically endangered in 2008. They are gaining ground again in Belize.

Our tanks are full of life, even on the microscopic level! This video showcases some of the mysid shrimp in our Nearshore Reef tank. These small crustaceans help to keep our tanks clean by feeding on algae and detriutus. They also provide a source of food for our larger animals.

At the station, Rice established the Life Histories Program, which tracks the growth and development of marine invertebrates from egg to adult, and how those changes affect their ability to reproduce, disperse and adapt to different environments.
