Happy Transit Equity Day! We believe that everybody—no matter where they live or who they are—deserves to live in a place that is healthy, prosperous, and resilient. That’s the world we’re working towards.

"There’s a growing push to take observed vehicle speed out of the equation...Reliance on driver behavior to gauge reasonable speeds has meant that when more drivers speed, speed limits must be raised, even in the face of concern for safety."

"Meeting parking requirements is one of the first make or break tests for a [real estate] deal to determine its viability, and it establishes the rest of the building form around it." We should be building around people, not parking.

Historic preservation gone too far? "We need more housing more than we need a non-working gas station," wrote one community member regarding the effort to award landmark status to a defunct gas station.

Bundling transit & sports tickets could grow the fan base & reduce drunk driving & traffic. But "Hard Rock Stadium...has limited bus and no direct rail connections to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, and it’s surrounded by 140 acres of parking lots"

"It is astonishing that states could set goals for deaths/injuries that are higher than previous years with no penalties, accountability, or loss of federal dollars, but this is how the federal program is currently designed." Definitely time for a change:

Some members of Congress are thinking big on transportation policy: “We cannot continue to underfund transit, pedestrian & bicycle infrastructure—they are an important part of the climate solution & provide additional transportation choices for Americans.”

Learning algorithms can differentiate “motor cities” in North America and Australia from the rest of the world, just using maps. It also turns out those cities are 55% more dangerous for drivers than “high transit cities” of Europe. HT
