Got a paper rejected with 2 accepts and one confused reviewer (which we addressed during rebuttal). Why do we put ourselves (and more importantly our students) through this? There’s got to be a more rational way to go about this

Agreed. We need to move away from competitive conferences and have more journals which accept papers if they are correct and advance the field. Stop the beauty contest of a limited number of slots

Especially when the “competition” is so noisy and biased (in many different ways). The whole thing is absurd.

Maybe we should think abouta new journal which is electronic, OA, etc? The problem is getting reviewers to review. That is the thing which makes JoC so slow to publish papers, the reviewers. Have been an editor for ages, and it always amazes me how it take months/years to review.

What I want is a place that peer reviews papers for correctness and clarity but where reviewers’ personal tastes and world views don’t impact decisions. As researchers, we should be able to make up our own minds about the importance/value of a result.

And if a paper is correct and the reviewers think it contributes something then it should be published, not put in a competition for a limited number of slots

And any work which has already appeared in conference form is automatically rejected

One of the things that would be good to address somehow is students. The stress students are under to get papers at EC, Crypto, CCS etc is crazy and the lack rationality in the process just makes things worse.

That is indeed the main issue I think. I get "mildly pissed off" when a paper is rejected because I know it will get published somewhere, and I am long past caring whether the papers are in the so-called stellar venues, as I know impact does not come from them.

It is the students/young faculty who get penalized by the conference culture.

Students go to conferences, and half the talks are boring as hell because they are people presenting results which are better given in print. Would be better to have students at conferences interacting with good speakers on good topics [i.e send them all to #realworldcrypto]
