We're currently working on a load of exciting new stuff for the game. We plan to continue doing updates with gameplay improvements, like the steam workshop and modding that we’re working on now, or quality of life additions to make the game smoother.

This led to a lot of backwards and forwards between the team – it’s an important thing to get right after all. Then the closed Beta was very helpful in terms of feedback. Although I think we maybe were too careful with them, maybe the next one will be more OP…

But adding this faction (and the new heroes) was a lot of work – particularly as we needed to balance them with the classic factions and characters. It was the old game of – how do we make them fun and new, but not OP. We don't want them making an old faction redundant.

We’re also really happy with the new Goblins faction in the ‘Through the Myrror’ update. Master of Magic is what one could call a kitchen sink fantasy world, in that it has almost every fantasy trope you can think of. Almost, Goblins seemed like a glaring omission!

You can see our work most clearly in the DLC/Update content. That is stuff that we created, it is new, it works with the original, but adds something fresh. So new skills and traits open up new gameplay possibilities. New wizards and races also give a fresh perspective.

In the end, we always go back to checking if our changes did not alter the feel of the game too much. And well, sometimes, we just do what we must and hope for the best.

We had to do this with great care. It takes a lot of careful consideration. On one side, you do not want to mess with the original recipe. On the other side, you simply do not have the same ingredients and tastes have changes, so you try to make adjustments.

Master of Magic is one of those games that really defined the genre, so of course it was an honour to work on it and try to give it a second life. We wanted to update the game’s graphics and mechanics while staying true to the classic elements of the game.

That way, if there is an imbalance between the opposing army rosters, this affects both players equally, and their overall score for the two games will reflect their ability rather than the imbalance between the opposing forces.

One solution to this issue is to play mirror matches, where two identical battles are set up, on identical maps, with each player playing one army in one of the games and the other army in the other game.

This is not strictly balanced, because some troops work better in combination with other complementary types, and some troops are more cost-effective when used in small numbers than when forming a large proportion of the army.
