provide all sides of the argument (reviewers are partly to blame for not calling him on that). But his efforts to translate a complicated topic for a lay audience is commendable with a basic message of "Sleep is Good", (I don't buy the harm done by the book argument at all) 3/

I won't argue he oversimplified, but I agree with the morale of the story. My bigger issue is the tone of the blog. This is clearly not written to engage in a scientific discussion of debatable points (which is what they are). It's interesting he uses the term "scaremongering" 4/

hi! I'm the author of that essay. I'm down to engage in a scientific discussion of debatable points. Let me know if I got anything wrong in my essay, I will correct it.

I'll start with sleep deprivation does cause death as made evident by animal models (obviously can't test this experimentally in humans) Everson, C. A., Bergmann, B. M., & Rechtschaffen, A. (1989). Sleep deprivation in the rat: III. Total sleep deprivation. Sleep, 12(1), 13-21.

your tweet seems to suggest that all animals models show that sleep deprivation causes death. however, it causes death in some animal models, it doesn't cause death in other animal models. I don't see how rats are a uniquely good example here.

Haha, well I'm personally not going to risk it... but I know it causes death in mice and flies and I think cats, not sure which animals it wouldn't eventually lead to death in eventually tbh.

Sleep field is wild man! Should open some interesting debates. I would think humans sleep would be better modeled by rats than flies, but obviously neither sufficient, and u were right that there is a lot going on in FFI. A lot of work to be done...

I think I should note that I got too caught up in defending the "lack of sleep doesn't directly kill" but originally i was just saying that FFI is a really bad example to use that lack of sleep kills... i do deserve this tho bc preview on the link does state this w/out context

One thing I don't think Matt highlighted is that sleep amt in humans is normally distributed so some ppl need 4hrs and some ppl need 12 for optimal functioning, but the vast majority is 8. So if you are a person that functions great after 4 or 5 hours of sleep, that could be ur #

But if you're struggling, then tip #1 would be get more sleep. I'm guessing he glazed over that bc he knows everybody would then try to convince themselves they are a 4-6hr person, but may be causing undue anxiety in natural short sleepers.
