    Already Toast has been out for six months! I'm so grateful for all the support and have been especially moved to hear from many readers/caregivers who have told me it helped them feel seen--a huge part of what I hoped the book would accomplish.

    My book Renewal was delayed two weeks because and its suppliers couldn't get paper in time; I know lots of other cases of similar delays. Here's an explanation.

    Yes! To me, "candor" implies, "Here's how I understand the situation, I want to know how you understand the situation so we can get on the same page about how to move forward. "To be honest" implies, "I've got a pipeline to God and you don't know sh*t from shinola." ;)

    "I'm just being honest" is a poor excuse for being rude. Candor is being forthcoming in what you say. Respect is being considerate in how you say it. Being direct with the content of your feedback doesn't prevent you from being thoughtful about the best way to deliver it.

    ok -- this is not my area. but hard to look at this w/o seeing the hand of the arms industry... I'm all for US-Aussie collaboration, but certainly understand the French upset, and overall misses a chance to strengthen US-EU defense ties as well. Would love to read a good piece.

    And then a position opens, and there’s four requirements, and they have two of the four, and they say, “Well, I can’t apply for this, I’m not perfect.” And a guy comes along and has one of the four and says, “Yeah, I got this.” And gets the job even though he’s half as qualified

    important -- and you can also double-mask, both surgical and cloth.

    It's not a bad idea to upgrade your mask, especially if you're at higher risk or others around you aren’t effectively masked, given Delta. N95 masks are more protective, followed by three-ply surgical (blue) masks, then fabric masks. A fabric mask is a lot better than no mask.

    During the Russian invasion of Georgia in August 2008, the channel between Admiral Mullen & General Makarov was one of the best ones that the Bush administration had available at the time. At a time of very heightened tensions between our 2 countries, they spoke frequently.

    The most upsetting thing about this whole arrangement is that it's really a battle b/w European arms manufacturers and American ones...

    Many jokes here, but the bottom line is: the US has a strong interest in improved European defense capacity and capabilities, but not in full-fledged European defense autonomy. To thread that tricky needle, US policymakers will have to do better than this.

    Just to be clear, I was the Director of Policy Planning for when she was Secretary of State; I never advised directly but was proud to be in his Administration. But these are definitely my views!
