The Slack UI/UX is getting from better to worse.
It was much better a few versions ago.

1. I often open new DMs just to read earlier messages. Now, if I just read and close it saves empty message in drafts. 2. While typing the new DM it doesn't show me if the person is online until I send. 3. The mini profile pics on sidebar looks ugly. The green dots were better.

Thanks so much for elaborating! We would recommend using Cmd/Ctrl + K to search for your teammates and open your DM with them to avoid creating new drafts if you're just reading and will also allow you to see if they are online. We appreciate your feedback about the sidebar!
