oooo what about a "semi-mute" functionality in @SlackHQ where the channel doesn't light up all chat events but only ones deemed relatively novel

. there are a few use cases here -- sometimes people thread conversations, other times there's an ongoing conversation at the top-level. in the latter scenario, I'd like to know "Ah, there's new activity in this channel" but not every time someone responds with "ah"
