Did @SlackHQ really just update and make my sidebar hidden so I have to constantly open it? And not put in a preference to have it stay open? Surely I'm just unable to find out how to glue it open but I am stymied

It definitely shouldn't hide itself. 
That sounds odd. Can you try resetting the cache for your Slack app and let us know if that fixes it?
