Ok, so is it likely to return to how it was?

Nope, it won't be returning to how it was, but we will be restoring some of the functionality that is missing.

Why did it need changing in the first place?

New users weren't finding it super obvious that they received a new message via the browser tab. Additionally, we wanted to give the browser favicon a fresh coat of paint!

but now it doesn't even show anything different at all :(

Thanks for highlighting what you mean, Stephen. As well as showing a red badge for DMs and and mentions, when a user receives a new message, the title bar will flash to reflect that.

I use a Mac and my browser is where you've pressed the green button and it's full screen on it's own space. I don't see the title bar even then the point is being able to glance at that tab after concentrating elsewhere to see if there is anything to check without clicking tab
