You can fix broken notifications in iOS badges. A number appears in the badge, there is no message because it has already been viewed. It's a huge known issue and is a major pain for loyal users.
Two other things to note as well: background notification clearing is disabled when your phone is in "low battery" mode, and, if you force-quit the app (by swiping up to remove it from the task switcher). 2/2
