Perhaps they are pointing out what a small thing an achievement in sports is, compared to the vastness of the universe.
When sports players do something great and point up into the sky, is there a specific galaxy, of the millions that exist in our local Virgo Supercluster, that they are trying to point out? I'm having a heck of a hard time following the exact location gestured during each game.
