My main and only concern/question regarding how much Arthas was in control was after he was defeated he seemed relieved it was over. They did say that Zovaal did influence him quite a bit. Not saying he doesn't deserve punishment either just saying he wasn't all there I think.

That always came off to me as panic that it was over, because he knew what was waiting for him, or at least had an idea. The Lich King was the only thing keeping him out of Hell.

It was Arthas who was also holding back the Scourge and it was Uther who acknowledged that. So there definitely was a lingering of good in Arthas (holding Jaina's locket, etc). But he was definitely mostly gone.

My interpretation was always he had total control until frostmourne, which drove him mad, robbed him of his soul and sense of morality. Even then, he was behind the wheel But when he put on the helm he was merged with nerzhul and trapped in his own body. Ultimately he was a tool
