Well, Illidan doesn't even go to the Shadowlands at least as far as we're aware. Guy got a "Get out of Shadowlands Free Card" when fed off of Gul'dan's skull. Now he just goes directly to the Twisting Nether and can go back to his body.

His Immortal Demon Soul... Canonically, the player’s DH have one too, so they won’t go to the Shadowlands either. You learn this if you decide to be the sacrifice for one of the portals in the DH intro.

Yep. Looks like Demons (and a rare few demon hunters who fed more off of demons than their fellow Illidari) go to the nether instead of the Shadowlands. And much like the SL rules, being truly killed in the nether brings oblivion. Essentially a different afterlife cycle.
