I've noticed this heavily for Kael'thas who was (like almost all character in TBC) was done dirty. People throw their headcanons, speculations, etc on him and the matter of the fact is he became a villain. If I had a magic wand that swept away all the bad writing in past expansions I would wave the shit out of it. But it's extremely frustrating when you're just talking about his established lore and somebody butts in saying that the lore is wrong and that their headcanon is right.
Yea, it's pretty weird people do this. Like it's what happened to BfA essentially, people didn't like the story even though it was pretty well written so now the whole xpac sucks and all that lore doesn't matter.
I don't Kael at all but I'm not going to be like eff Shadowlands and the storylines because I don't like certain plot points or characters. Sometimes I even find that the story does a good job in dealing with them and I like them a bit better.
I haaaate the head canon Andys. Had someone write a whole ass novel for their "fix" and "addition" to dark knights or whatever from Naxxramas as "death knights that are alive and more powerful than DKs" and I was like.. huuuuh
And also why when I made Druids of the Bloom, and everyone kept telling me they're Druids of the Branch I'm like.. no, they're not, because Druids of the Branch HAVE no lore beyond tree form and speculation and I am not going to write my own lore for them.
I hate how oftentimes we're the bad guys in this, the Lore/Fun Police/Nazis. Just because we take the lore for what it is and what it isn't.
If Bobby Joe wants to intemperate the Lore and maybe make his own fanfiction regarding it that's great and that's fine. But don't expect me to read it and go, "This is the lore now."
To be somewhat fair to those people, the actual developers seemed to have forgotten who Kael'thas originally was and are just using the ridiculously awful (and magically corrupted) version of him for BC as the template for his Shadowlands portrayal.
I'm not saying people are wrong for being upset at his potrayal. But to outright ignore his TBC counterpart and say that lore never happened is ridiculous. And that's coming from someone who dislikes TBC's narrative completely.
I think this is on a great deal because Kael is a great and sympathetic character in wc3. And Quel'dorei story is important to many players. What happened in TBC is a cruel perversion and horrible writing what Kael did not deserved to be victim of.
Illidan got retconned into anti hero. Vashj got it easy in shadowlands. Instead of seeing character who already suffered enough to have a better enstablished afterlife, all his fans get is insane prideful prick. Kael's case backlash and denial is basically same to GoT season 8
