if illidan respected kael'thas even remotely or ever actually tried to empathize instead of being like "oh yeah youre a magic addict like me, go get a bunch of your guys to die for me and ill show you how to avoid that"

Illidan who slaughtered all of moonguard to empower himself, etc, has zero business being like “kael is kind of sus” like you are the SAME guy
Could be exactly why Illidan didn't entirely like or trust Kael. I think he saw way too much of himself in him.
