if illidan respected kael'thas even remotely or ever actually tried to empathize instead of being like "oh yeah youre a magic addict like me, go get a bunch of your guys to die for me and ill show you how to avoid that"

I mean, Kael’thas “really is” a person who deeply cares about everyone and is trying to make things right despite everyone killing him. even if he can’t admit he’s wrong he’s trying to help, and he’s young and stupid and wants power too, but illidan is and was EXACTLY the same.
Illidan and Kael'thas have the same issue where they don't ask for help or don't communicate well. Had Illidan and Kael'thas talked and discussed more they would've been more successful in their goals.
