Sorry the stone says cure. Not you, misplaced. He could have looked for a Cure, and that would end up being the sunwell but instead he went to outland to find a new power.
To be fair Kael'thas thought the Sunwell was lost entirely until the Legion showed up and said, "Hey we got something for you." and it was portrayed that only through the Legions methods could it work. Since Lor'themar's messages were destroyed before Kael could get them.
