I feel like a lot of the hate toward BFA was more something that was kinda largely bigged up by certain big name content creators. Especially when classic was on the horizon and the hype for that was in full force. It wasn't my favourite either, but it wasn't bad by all means.
Classic WoW has earned more of my ire because most of the people (not all, of course) are extremely toxic from it. Also, I just didn't have much fun playing it and it was extremely easy to fall off of it compared to other expansions and games.
The irony of course when the 'nicer community' and 'harder game' was the biggest selling point of the hype. I think the other thing too is that, frankly, I feel like people were kinda spoiled by Legion and can't see anything beyond Legion as 'good', only ever sub par.
A lot of the reason I didn't like Legion as much as everyone else had a lot to do with the story and what characters they were focusing on at the time. Excluding Illidan, it was mostly an Alliance-fest throughout. BfA managed to give me both Alliance & Horde in terms of story.
