The main two reasons why I think it is Argus and not the Sword is the fact that Argus itself is the Titan of Death and therefore has some form of a connection with the Afterlife. And two the color of the Argus Star and the Soul are identical.
I also have a hard time believing that Denathrius' blade is capable of damaging the Arbiter to that level or degree. But that's just my take from it all. I like the Argus theory because it means we get more lore on him in particular. Which was lacking in Legion.
