There is a disconnect between Shadowlands and BFA because BFA grew off the familiar. You were questing in zones you knew existed with faction aligned characters that you had a personal connection to. Now you’re on a Alien planet. I’d say it’s normal to feel a disconnect.
That definitely could be it. Though I've known the Shadowlands and a place like Pandaria existed too since they've been mentioned in the game(s) before. I didn't feel as hesitant with Pandaria but then again it wasn't an afterlife and that could be it.
