I always recomend the manga to people, since the anime is... way over the top 
Btw, if you have the time, I recomend the manga. It extends a few sub-arcs that the anime barely touched upon and changes some things 
Finally watched the masterpiece that was Death Note with my friends. It was really good. Rough around the edges with its third act and finale but ultimately really good. 8.5/10 I liked it for what it is worth but man does it get screwy with some of its characters.pic.twitter.com/4PKN1LuOXJ

I may get shit for this, but I think it's a pretty overrated anime. Is it good? Yes for sure, but personally I wouldn't count near the top in my personal ranking

I agree. It's one of those animes i considered really good as a teen and then later it's more ok-ish. It's entertaining for sure, but I wouldn't consider Death Note a 'Masterpiece'.

If you liked the 'tone' of Death Note, I can highly recommend Monster. It's a mystery thriller grounded in realism and easily in my top 5 somewhere. A little lengthy perhaps though!
