Not taking sides here, but to ask a question that might lead to a possible answer; wasn't the brown to green issue established lore from the very beginning? (one thing I believe for certain: the human mods are good and long overdue.)
I don't believe it was outright stated until TBC and nobody really batted an eye over that as far as I recall. I didn't actually play during TBC too so I could be wrong in there was no negative reaction. But I've never heard of such a thing.

One thing I remember back in TBC is that the Mag'har introduction was kinda overshadowed by the massive Eredar/Draenei retcon, and the Blood Elves being on Horde at the time. So people kinda glossed over the brown orcs for the most part.

In this day and age I feel like people *might* have freaked out over it given how people are reacting to the new customizations to the races above. It's always something that ticks off somebody nowadays.

Remember when they took away a bunch or portals after Legion and everyone freaked out? I think people would have accepted it more easily if it had been explained, even a lame explanation. (ie) "Mages were needed elsewhere." In this case: Brown orc + demon blood = green orc.
