This change is likely to be the result of a difference in the way pets are handled in SL. It seems that they all use the same model / ID, to which the pet appearance is applied. Prior to SL they all kept their original IDs and presumably some carryover data from the original NPCs
This probably explains why my Rylak pet no longer flies when I tell it to attack units in the sky. That's rough.
