"focusing on a few but well-written characters". Well-written is debatable, but otherwise this is the exact story reason why so many of my friends quit this expansion. If the story only focuses on a handful of characters, and they don't connect to players, the players will leave.
I don't focus on the small characters you and your friends do/did clearly. They're not as necessary as say Thrall, Jaina, Baine, etc are to the story I care about. They don't make or break the entire story the other characters do. They're more like extras than anything else.
To be honest, even important characters didn't get established in BfA. How did the Horde leaders react to Sylvanas burning the tree? Were they happy, upset?
