i got a hot take for ya: fans and artists were rightfully upset at Sylvanas burning Teldrassil, but the call for retribution is so much higher in the fanbase than when Garrosh enslaved and murdered trolls of the Horde and created a fascist police state with public executions

and that was ACTUAL hell to RP during because the creeping disease of fascism was spreading from both in-game events and npc dialogue to the playerbase, non-orcs were treated as pariahs and fair game to be harassed or killed, trolls and sympathizers were forced OUT of the city

corpses were literally strung up in public places as a warning to anyone who dared step out of line!!!

ppl were outraged but there was an interesting fuel to rping it because it allowed the races of the Horde to examine their relationships to each other and see the rotten roots of racism/blind nationalism

i think, honestly... that part of why the night elf playerbase reacted so strongly to the burning is obviously, we lost a canon major city that a lot of ppl had strong memories tied to. (forsaken lost the undercity for an even more pointless reason but i digress--)

but, the big kicker, is that the burning was treated like a joke for so long. people loved to mock the burning of Teldrassil and memeify it, and i can absolutely see that as both insulting and with some uhh unfortunately loaded implications (burning humanoids alive is loaded)

i've already written about how comparing the Holocaust to the burning of the tree is tricky and inappropriate for a number of reasons, as a Jewish player, but that's not what i'm talking about in this thread so

my point is, ppl who play beautiful elf ppl are frustrated that the war crime committed against them wasn't being treated with the gravity it deserved. i would like to posit that the slaughter and enslavement of brutish tusked people by their own leader was AS horrible

but ppl don't like to look back at that time much except in meme form, also-- i still see "Garrosh did nothing wrong" parroted jokingly by randos when folks don't see *that* as a jokey reference to "Hitler did nothing wrong"

As much as I liked Garrosh I've grown very very VERY tired of the "Garrosh Did Nothing Wrong Meme" which is at times used on other characters like Sylvanas, like Grom, like Sargeras, etc. It was maybe "funny" for like a hot minute but it got old rather fast.
