Sylvanas is also a very popular villain in WoW? We can use that same logic. I understand why people's childhood characters are near and dear. It goes without saying. Subtweeting about people interacting w/ you on twitter about character discussion is just what?
The issue is that Sylvanas has only finally been confirmed and unveiled as a villain after years of building up to it. Arthas became a villain almost immediately after he started doing some really messed up stuff. Even today you have people who justify Sylvanas' actions.

People to this day still argue the moral ambiguity with Arthas committing genocide on his own people to this day with Stratholme? Even though admittedly that's his segway to villainy? And while Arthas' situation is actually grey and nuanced, it wasn't right. Yet here we are.

People can like Arthas. People can like Sylvanas. People can like Villains. That's what this issue stems from. People are taking issue with villains who do horrible things - when they're villains, that's what they do.
