This is pretty much the reason I despise Illidans arc in Legion; instead of actually recognising that many deaths and ruined lives could have been avoided if he trusted others more to help with the Legion, his messiah complex demanded he do it all himself to be a hero...
Illidan in Legion in a lot of ways is better than Illidan in TBC but it was missing that when it came to his role in the expansion. I was fine with him helping us defeat the Legion but it would've added to him more if he showed remorse or regret to his past actions.

...just felt tacked on and a desperate attempt to make up for wasting one of their biggest lore characters so early in the games history, rather than something organic that actually happened. I would have liked it more if they, as you suggested, touched more on his regrets.
