Garrosh started to be popular by MoP because late-Cata was when we'd recruited Zaela and the Dragonmaw and everyone was hoping Pandaria would make him mellow out, but instead Blizz announced really early he would turn evil and be the last boss. Which soured the entire expansion.
Garrosh recruited Zaela in early Cata not late Cata. Again I'm pretty certain that the reason why they made Garrosh antagonistic was because of the fact that the players wanted him gone. But that's just my take. We can debate forever on why he ended up as he did.
