I haven't done a hot take in a while but here goes: When it comes to villains and antagonistic characters in general - you don't always have to spare them or redeem them. Sometimes the fun of having a villain is them being villains and paying for it.

I really hope they leave some of the characters alone in shadowlands and let them just be bad guys who have traumatized the citizens of Azeroth. Like redeeming a character like Arthas just feels bad to me because him giving in and becoming the bad guy makes him interesting.

Arthas is complicated. He did a lot of what he did for his people but lost it to vengeance along the way. Then Ner'zhul essentially had him and have him carry out his dark deeds. He's a mixed bag of making bad decisions and then being forced to do it by getting his soul removed.

I still feel like him being redeemed just kind of feels icky considering the sheer amount of bad that came out of all of it. It's complicated for sure but idk, I prefer we never really run into him at all but we'll see.

I think we are going to see him again but I hope it's for the right reasons. I was fine with Illidan's "redemption" (which he really didn't have one honestly) because he was never about that life anyways. Arthas would really need to vary.

I still can't understand why everyone I see automatically thinks of redemption when people mention an Arthas appearance in Shadowlands. How likely is it that Arthas died, was judged, and sent to the Maw to suffer for the atrocities he committed in life?

They very well could just make him similar to Illidan where he's still a very selfish and dark character and his goal is to either get out of the Maw or make it better for himself.
