The only interesting level up story from the SL zones is the Ysera one but...again...that's because I have a ton of attachment to her character and the storyline itself is really well done. Here's the exact problem with an expansion just pandering to nostalgia of old characters.

Honestly was more worried about them NOT focusing on older characters & instead focusing on the new Shadowlands one. I have like no care in the world about these Covenants or their Leaders. What does interest me is the characters who're in these realms that we're familiar with.

Well yeah exactly that's what I mean. When you're waving signs and making billboards going, "ZOMG GAIZ KAEL'THAS IS BACK! UTHER IS BACK! DRAKA!!!!" then that's what the discourse will be about. Nobody is talking about Kyrestia or the Winter Queen or Prince Whateverhisnameis

When the whole realm is the Land of the Dead it should be entirely expected to see old faces again. It would be a crime to not have them be a major focus of some kind in the story or zones. At least they're choosing the more obscure characters or characters who got done dirty.

I'm not saying bringing back old characters isn't in theme for what the expansion is. I'm saying that when you're flatout pandering to nostalgia by doing so, it makes it way harder for people to become attached to NEW characters because they only care about the returning ones.

Mists of Pandaria is amazing because they introduce an absolute enormous cast of unique, interesting, and NEW characters. Varian and Garrosh weren't running around in 5.0 stealing the spotlight.

I think the issue is it's just hard to care about characters in charge of the Shadowlands entirely. With Mists of Pandaria they feel like genuine people you'd meet. Shadowlands its people who're the caretakers or basically Gods. It's hard enough to care about Titankeepers.
