They were literally just squatting on their own land. I have no idea how you can try and pretend that the horde werent the aggressors here lol. Sylvanas nor Garrosh invaded their lands because of some ancestral fight over land rights.

I personally think PvP and Lore are no longer needed to mesh. Most Pvpers to my knowledge care very little about the lore so they could easily keep PvP going as a past thing. For story, if they really wanted it to they could make it instead into a sports-like event.

There will always be War in Warcraft. That's not going anywhere but I think they can show war being done within the game and it's story through the conflicts we face. Shadowlands is a good way of showing conflict with other factions that isn't the Alliance or the Horde.

Ha, I wrote just that in my fan fiction some years ago. Thrall bans Mak'goras and instead establishes a sports tournament in the Orgrimmar Arena. (basically PvP detached from lore)
