Such a premium placed on balance in WoW, maybe they had to kill Vol'jin because they were killing Varian. Varian is gone but Vol'jin had a roll in BfA. What if his story continues in Shadowlands and all this was part of the writers plans? Would that be satisfying?
The fact that Vol'jin returned as a Loa/Ghost in BfA was great but the fact that he -had- to die for the sake of equal or for the sake of the story for Sylvanas to rise to power is still pretty bullshit.
I think the writers (who are good writers imo) sometime come up with big ideas, too big to act out in game in a satisfying way. In their minds they probably have all those blanks filled in. They see the story they 'meant' rather than the one they showed. We're stuck with less.
