I said it when they began doing it in WoD, and it remains relevant and a source of problems to the game right now:
Making the player character an actual story character and affects things was a terrible decision since the game wasn't built that way from the beginning. #Warcraft

Mists of Pandaria just had us be the Veteran of the Horde along with our own team of other veterans and it worked fine and dandy. Obviously, the player character deserves some level of recognition but not on the levels of say, "Commander, General, or Class Leader." (1/2)

Battle for Azeroth didn't fall into this too badly until the Champion of Azeroth storyline kicked in. Alliance side I think you were Ambassador (can't remember) and then Horde was "Speaker of the Horde" which rarely came up. (2/2) I fully agree the focus on us needs to go. (2/2)

Like I said, I think WoD started it. You were the canon leader of the faction's expedition on another world. Lore characters started reporting to you. Then it got worse and worse and in Legion you were leading all the [Your Class]'s in the world. And then got even worse.

Really worried about Shadowlands falling into this trap. They had it start out that the Convenents didn't care we were Azeroth's chosen or whatever. But our means of escaping the Maw is because of that.
