Purists didn't save anything. You would've still had the Warcraft 3 of old. In fact, there was the option of enabling the older version in the early beta. There is quite literally no reason for the purists to demand this when they already have what they want.

Purists demanded it for the same reason people demanded no changes for classic. They don't want the current Devs ruining something they love.
