There's also the whole manner of really extremely hard to get armors still in the game. From mythic progression, hard mode weapons, hard mode armor, the mage tower appearances and so much more. People do see those and can go, "Oh wow that's really cool!"
It is a slight shame that those things don't scale up in difficulty, so that people could still obtain them. Like if someone starts playing a new class. Also ads to it for those who have it though so there's goods and bads to scaling it
