While it's true that Putress and Varimathras used the blight earlier than intended I do not doubt that Sylvanas wouldn't have used the Lich King's arrival as an opportunity to strike him down. But the whole introduction of blight in itself is what I am mostly talking about here.

Sylvanas explained the logic behind that in Before the Storm. Those forsaken were still connected to their living kin, as you said, tempted to remain with them. How long till they decided they were better off with the Alliance? Sylvanas couldn't risk it.
