I missed Blizzard saying that "it's possible" that Mechagon will be fully explorable outside of a dungeon setting in the future. If there weren't other obvious signs that Mechagnomes are going to be an Allied Race, that's it right there. That's their base they return to.

They can, actually. I'd imagine you can choose which parts are metal so one leg might be normal so show the equipment. So, this would be optional. With the new transmog feature, you could hide almost any gear so you might just not see most of it on other characters anyways.
