If I remember correctly, I think the sentiment was that some of his activity in cataclysm specifically was perceived as Mary Sue, hence the Green Jesus name. After that, every little thing was overanalyzed and stuffed into this context by players.
To this day i'll never understand the hatred Thrall receives. I get it, he made Garrosh Warchief and he left the Horde for a time for family and for Azeroth. But its not like Thrall didn't actively try to correct these mistakes. He did kill Garrosh after all.
